Industrial competitiveness
Industrial competitiveness is essential in today’s global environment. Industrial hyper-specialisation, logistical advances and the inter-company trust that has been generated within the framework of the European Union have encouraged the expansion of a network of collaboration between the continent’s most important industries.
Sectors such as aeronautics, the automotive industry and industrial machinery construction, among many others, have encouraged supplier companies to export industrial utsourcing in order to compete in complex and volatile environments.
The export origins of
industrial outsourcing in Europe
Exporting industrial outsourcing in Europe has its origins in the automotive sector in the 1970s. It arose in response to the demands of a new competitive environment that required greater flexibility in the production process, specialisation, customisation and customer service.
In southern European markets such as Italy, Spain and Portugal, production centres were set up for some industrial processes of powerful French and German automotive companies. This outsourcing in a high value-added sector led to specialisation and innovation in Spanish industry, which soon spread to other sectors.
Industrial outsourcing has historically been a highly relevant sector for small and medium-sized companies in southern Europe and has fostered the specialisation, professionalisation and technical training of their companies. It has also favoured the redistribution of wealth between countries and has encouraged its export.
The specialisation of the main European countries
The network of inter-firm collaboration in advanced industrial sectors is extensive and dynamic. We find a high concentration of firms specialising in specific industrial areas in some countries or regions, but the European industrial ecosystem is today very diverse.
Germany is arguably the leading outsourcing country in Europe, especially in the automotive industry. Italy continues to stand out for its specialisation in activities related to machinery and mechanical equipment. The United Kingdom is strong in the manufacture of parts for the aeronautical sector and the plasticising of metals. In Spain, there are companies specialising in turning, stamping and the production of parts for the automotive and aeronautical sectors.
Other outstanding examples are the production of plastic parts and moulds for electrical engineering and aeronautics in Austria, moulds for the plastics industry in Portugal or the manufacture of parts for household appliances in Poland. Finally, France has highly specialised companies in machining, parts manufacturing, cutting and stamping for the automotive and aeronautics industries.
Industrial outsourcing sector activities
The industrial outsourcing sector is large and dynamic, with highly specialised small and medium-sized vendors. Some of the common manufacturing processes for exporting industrial outsourcing to Europe are as follows:
